Mountain Treks

 MOUNTAIN TREKS

Royal ecotravel organizes trips to various high peaks in East Africa including Mt. Kenya, Aberdares, Kilimanjaro, Meru, and Elgon. We take great pride in the high rate of success for summit ascents by our clients, which we largely attribute to our dedicated mountain crews who work hard towards achieving this goal regardless of the trekkers’ age or past high altitude hiking experience. Our safari cooks know the dietary requirement conducive to the high and wild places we venture to and our guides are well trained to manage wilderness emergencies.

Mt. Kenya

Established in 1949, Mt. Kenya National park covers an area of 588sq km, the boundary being the 3,364m contour. This is where you find Mt. Kenya, the highest mountain in the country and the second highest in Africa.  This is also the seat of Ngai, the god of the Kikuyu.  At 5199m, this massive stand has amazed most hikers being the only snow-caped mountain in the world that straddles the equator. The mountain is among the most beautiful volcanic mountains with eye-catching undulating and ewe-inspiring scenery. The gigantic peaks, picturesque valleys and crystal clear streams cascading from the glaciers which seem to meet at the major peaks add elegance to this majestic stand.

Mt. Kenya’s highest peaks, Batian (5199m) and Nelion (5188m) can only be reached by mountaineers with technical skills. However, Point Lenana (4985m), the third highest peak can be reached by trekkers and is the usual goal for most people, offering a fantastic experience without the risks of real climbing.

Mt. Kilimanjaro

Just over the border, in Tanzania, the square silhouette of Kilimanjaro marks the highest point of the Africa and the tallest free standing mountain in the world. It is referred to as the roof of Africa rising 5895m and easily accessed from Arusha (Tanzania). Every year thousands of visitors, inspired by the words of Karen Blixen, march towards the lethal screes and ice terraces of Kilimanjaro. Although the mountain is in Tanzania, Kenya receives the best view from Amboseli National Park. With its snow-capped peaks and breathtaking sceneries, this dome-shaped massive offers its hikers value for their money and effort. Its abundance in flora and fauna, with some of the rarest and most beautiful plant and animal species make this a special place for every hiker.  It is not a hard mountain to climb, although you must be prepared for a good test on your physical fitness. However, the sheer beauty of the mountain urges one on and scaling to the top, 5895sq km can be a challenge.
