Royal Ecotravel planned a 4 week customized trip for our group which included several safaris in Kenya and Tanzania. A bike trip, boat ride, rafting and climbing Mt. Kenya and Kilimanjaro. Between the wild and adventures we relaxed and enjoyed our hosts and guides. Rebecca connected us with excellent guides for mountain climbing. And she knows out-of-the-way places with special charm like the guest house at LAKE NAKURU where the wild animals roam just outside the door. It was a trip of a lifetime. After all night plane trip to Nairobi, we arrived at 5.30am and our extraordinarily humorous tour guide, Rebecca, told us that we had an all day raft trip down the Tana River planned for the day. It’s a very technical river and our guide would give instructions like, “one forward stroke on the right and hit the deck.” Translation – get to the bottom on the boat and hold on – we’re going over another drop-off.
Next was a series of safaris to Lake Bogoria, flamingo land, LAKE NAKURU, where the wild animals roamed right outside our guest house, L. Naivasha, where a hippo charged our glorified canoe 3 times, biking with zebras in Hell’s Gate, and Amboseli where Kilimanjaro provides the backdrop for the big game viewing.
Kelly McDevitt, a patroller friend, met us in Arusha, Tanzania to climb Kilimanjaro. We opted for the 6 day Marangu Route (aka Coca cola route). It is an odyssey of transitions from jungle to high alpine tundra. We had quite by accident, picked a full moon time to make the final mid-night climb sans headlamp. We were roused up at 11pm to make the final attempt. No body really told us to concentrate on breathing, you just get lethargic, head achy, goofy, etc. but feel ever so much better when you remember to breathe and then you forget again. We arrived at the top 19,340’, just after moonset and sunrise. I now have a new answer to the eternal question, “Why?”, because it feels so good when you go down!
We picked up Fiona who had a chance encounter with a medicine man who cured her of an almost trip ending illness. Then we headed out for more safaris to Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara before going back to Kenya and safaris to Masai Mara and Meru. In the Mara, Megan got to hold a 2 week old abandoned baby leopard and in the remote Meru Park we were awaken in the middle of the night by loud animal bellowing. The next morning Rebecca laughingly told us that it was baboons warning each other of a lion hunting. She was afraid to call Brian on his cell phone for fear we would come out of our tents – fat chance! We found the lion tracks very near Megan and Fi’s tent.
Climbing Mt. Kenya was our finale – what a way tot go! It is much more rugged, spectacular, technical and less traveled than Kilimanjaro. It’s a harrowing ride in -5hrs to go 30km- you get the idea. After three days hiking through some incredibly gorgeous country – water falls, hanging valleys, etc, we all climbed the third summit, Lenana ( the banana) 16,346’, ending up at Shipton’s Camp for breakfast. Kelly and Brian attempted the technical summit, Batian, but the preceding 8 days of snow foiled their plans. They made it to the base of Firmin’s Tower and were happy with their new found love. It was difficult to say goodbye to our now fast friends - here as everywhere.

“...Thank you very much for the wonderful safari and all your arrangements, we all had a great time, unforgetable vacation that makes me thinking to come back and do it again in different parts of beautiful country. Please pass our appreciations to the rest of your crew; George is a fantastic driver, Francis is a super cook, I will do the tomato-fice-avocado salad pretty often now, and Augusto is such a nice companion and you are a great organizer! Everything was fantastic just the way I would not change anything.”Fiona Jose <fiona_jose@hotmail.com> Queensland Australia
